Gaiam Ball Chair

A gym floor mat made of rubber is an inexpensive way to introduce yourself to yoga. There’s a common mistake with people who want to start working out at home that they need to go on a buying spree for gym equipment. Not so.

That’s exactly how many of those tele-infomercial machines for home gyms end up as expensive clothes drying racks standing off in the corner.

The best rubber floor mat you’ll need for yoga is no larger than the top of your desk. There are two types of gym mats that should be mentioned: the thick and black kind that you use under home gyms, cardio equipment and weight racks; and the personal rubber gym mat that you see with yoga.

The yoga floor mat is designed to be lightly textured, and slightly tacky. Some mats are made of vinyl sponge foam but the best are made of natural rubber.

Yoga is one of the best gym exercises you can do on floors, available to every age and fitness level. It’s flowing movements will stretch and lengthen muscle fibers causing the muscles in the back, legs, chest and arms, to become stronger and streamlined. In comparison, lifting heavy weight training can cause muscles to tighten, making them stressed and congested with lactic acid, and increases the load on your joints. Yoga, done on rubber or non-slip surface floor mats, will keep the body moving so the muscles stay warm and lubricated.

gaiam products

Any floor exercise that can be done on mats is all the fitness regime you’ll need. Yoga is just one example, but then many floor exercises actually resemble yoga, and daily practice will better flexibility and strength over time.

Even if you are practicing only the physical aspects of yoga, you will reap healthy benefits and leave each session feeling invigorated, having washed away stress and tension. So try out a yoga mat ($20 – $60), rent or buy a tape, and see how inexpensive, and fun, it is to start your own home fitness gym.

The stability ball became a prominent part of the exercise world back in the 1990’s. Although various types of balls had been used as rehabilitation devices for years it wasn’t until trainers started using them in the last decade of the twentieth century that their popularity rose.

Stability balls, sometimes called a Swiss Ball, come in different sizes and are made of a heavy duty vinyl product that when filled with air can hold up to 600 to 700 pounds. They can be used by just about anybody, from the exercise novice to more experienced denizens of the gym.

There are six benefits to be had when using a stability ball.

1. Proper Body Alignment – The body will use muscle groups not normally taxed during training sessions with the ball. Natural motor reflexes will improve as these different muscle groups are forced to work as you maintain balance on the ball. That is the challenge posed by the ball, maintaining balance while exercising. As balance is improved alignment of body parts is enhanced.

2. Great Ab Workout – One of the great things about using one of these balls is the ability to target the abdominal muscles. Maintaining balance while exercising with a stability ball forces the abs and back muscles to work overtime because these muscle groups tie the upper and lower body together. Without strong core muscles’ balancing is much harder.

3. Stronger Muscles and Endurance – Because the ball helps target nearly all muscle groups it helps build strength, tone muscles and improve overall endurance. It also helps strengthen the back alleviating some forms of back pain and helps with over all flexibility.

4. Core Strength – The core muscles include the back and all the abdominals. These are the muscles that support and stabilize the body during all movements. By using the ball all these muscles are worked in all range of motion, ensuring a strong core.

5. Stretching – The ball enables a range of stretching motions that normally aren’t possible.

6. Weight Loss – As with any exercise routine, using a stability ball will increase metabolism which helps burn away excess body fat. This fat burning ability is further enhanced by the lean muscle mass built during exercise.

The stability ball is one of the best ways to strengthen the abdominals and lower back while also improving the functional strength, balance, and flexibility of the body.

The Stability Ball – Gaiam Fitness

The stability ball dates back to around 1960 when the Italian toy maker Aquilino Cosani designed and sold the ball mainly in Europe and it was known as the Gymnastik Ball.

It wasn’t until about 1980 that the exercise ball made its way to North America being used for clinical rehabilitation.

The stability ball has been called by a variety of other common names such as Exercise Ball, Swiss Ball, Balance Ball, Fitness Ball, Physio Ball etc.

Proper ball size is determined by the user’s height. When seated on the ball, your hips and knees should be close to parallel with the floor. The following is a size chart to help you determine which ball size is recommended for your height.

55cm – inflates to 21 inches high – 5′to 5′7"

65cm – inflates to 25 inches high – 5′8" to 6′3"

75cm – inflates to 29 inches high -Taller than 6′3"

Using a stability ball is great for many things. It can strengthen the back muscles, the core and abdominal muscles. If you are working out to achieve great abs, this ball can definitely target the abdominal areas.

Some easy to start exercises on the stability ball are sit-ups and crunches. These exercises will help you to use more muscles then by doing them on the floor. When using the ball for other exercises, such as holding the ball in front of you on the ground, and doing leg lifts, you want to make sure you have balance and use a focal point. Always remember to breathe and never hold your breath.

Sitting on the ball at any time, instead of in a chair, will give your body and core muscles a good workout. This will also help improve your posture and balance. By sitting straight up on the ball, this will take the pressure off of your back. The stability ball works the "foundation" or trunk in almost every exercise, whether it is a targeted activity for upper body, lower body, or specifically for the abdominals and low back. Your body can be easily positioned on the ball to go through a greater range of motion. Allows you to be comfortable "off " the floor for many exercises.

Because the ball is a little unstable and you must constantly adjust to remain balanced, use of the stability ball improves the functional strength, balance and flexibility of the body. Using free weights with the ball as a bench is great for all those stabilizer muscles.

Stability balls make great additions to anyone’s home. They can easily be used at the office or even deflate them and take them with you on vacation. No matter if they are used for strengthening the abdomens, flexibility, or balancing, the list goes on. The stability ball has become very popular, very easy to use and a must have for exercising.

If you spend long hours in the office, and if you work out constantly at your desk and before your computer, then you might find that your back aches more often than usual.

This may be due to the varying wrong positions that you put your body through as you churn out your reports and articles. You might also find that you are gaining weight in the most unlikely, and certainly unsightly areas, including your hips, legs, and buttocks.

gaiam exercise ball

You can avoid all these inconveniences by making use of an exercise ball chair. By turning your ordinary exercise ball into office equipment, you can flex your muscles, strengthen your core, and even conduct a mini-workout as you go through the daily grind. With proper use, an exercise ball chair can help you lose weight without you having to go to the gym and enroll in exercise programs that demand exorbitant joining fees. Along with a balanced diet and a good amount of relaxation, your exercise ball chair can even help you increase your resistance.

gaiam balanceball chair

Before getting an exercise ball chair, however, you need to buy one that correctly conforms to your body size and proportions. Your thighs should be sloping slightly downwards, and should not be at a perpendicular angle to the ball. The lower slope of your thighs eases the burden on your lower back, and keeps you from straining your spine unnecessarily. The exercise ball chair, however, should not be too tall, so that you end up looking like you are leaning on your desk to keep from diving forward.

If you start using the exercise ball chair, you might find it uncomfortable to sit in for long hours at a time. Start with about an hour or less, then sit on it for longer hours as the days go by. You can also exercise on it during downtime, say when your computer is saving an especially large file, or if you have to scan your hard drives for viruses or damage. With more practice, you can make your exercise ball chair your partner in fitness.

gaiam ball

If you are interested in purchasing one, consult with your local gym trainers and fitness centers on the feasibility of actually sitting on one for long hours each day. You may also need to pay your orthopedist or chiropractor a visit, so that you can check if your back muscles and bones are ready for using such a ball. Your hours on the exercise ball should count toward making your body better, not turning your nerves into a frazzled mass.

Yoga Mats and the Gaiam Yoga Mats

In my experience Yoga is one of the most enriching and invigorating forms of exercise you can do. It can compliment the workout regime of the most active health

enthusiast as well as enable simple and easy physical activity for those who are quite sedentary during the day. This includes 9-5 office workers who are at a desk all day. The importance of a good Yoga workout though is not just knowing how to do it but also setting up an area where you can perform Yoga in the most comfortable way.

One of the most crucial factors that attribute to the comfort level of any Yoga session is your Yoga mat. Now some people can make do without a mat, and that’s fine. However, most people, and that includes me, can’t sit on a hard floor for too long without getting sores so I need a good thick yoga mat to cushion the floor. I have noticed from personal experience that when I do Yoga with no mat or with a mat that is too thin I come off much worse that before I started the session. This includes sore feet and ankles. However, after using a thick or extra thick yoga mat not only can I have a Yoga session that is extremely comfortable but I can have it for a lot longer. This makes me look forward to my Yoga every morning because I know how amazing I will feel after and that the rest of my day will be energised.

There are a few things you need to consider before getting a Yoga mat that suits you. Different people will feel different on different types of mat:

  • Standard mat – this can be fine for some people as some people prefer having a session on a solid, firm ground
  • Cotton mat – these can be quite comfortable, but may not provide enough cushioning on a hard floor
  • Eco mat – These mats prioritize the eco-friendliness of the materials used to make the mat rather than the comfort, although some eco mats are of a really good quality.
  • – these are my favourite as the provide a good level of cushioning on a hard floor. Some people worry about balance being effected but my balance has been the same on these mats and even better in some positions.

So how do you go about finding a mat for you? The best way is to try them out first, if possible in order to check the comfort level of each one. I personally bought all of mine until I found the one that was perfect for you. At the end of the day all I want is a good Yoga session and my thick yoga mat always ensures I have one.

If you’re new to yoga or you’ve been at it for many years, you either need a mat right now, or you’ll need a new one some time in the future.

Maybe you started out with one of those colorful cheap mats, but found out it stunk to high heaven of chemicals? Or maybe you went the earth-friendly way and got a yoga mat made from jute. It didn’t smell bad, but then it didn’t last more than two months either. What’s a yoga practitioner to do?

Standard Plastic Yoga Mats

This is a common first-timer mistake, but it’s the cheapest type of mat and therefore expected of the newbies. But it IS a mistake if you intend to keep doing yoga. If you’re not sure, this type of mat may just turn you away from yoga altogether! First of all, it’s very thin and doesn’t provide much in the way of cushioning. Additionally it really smells of chemicals, and these chemicals are not conducive to good health! These types of mats are made from Phthalates.

This chemical turns hard plastic soft and causes lung and kidney damage in rats. Don’t leave this type of mat in your car, either. It will release this harmful chemical when it gets hot. And if you’re concerned about the environment, these aren’t for you, either. They are made using and e

nvironmentally dangerous process.

gaiam yoga mats

Cork or Jute Yoga Mats

Cork and jute yoga mats are environmentally friendly, but they have drawbacks of their own. They are made from porous plants, and therefore absorb your sweat when you practice your yoga. This results in a matching smell to your well-exercised but un-showered body, and a weakening of the structure over time. Now, it won’t fall apart like that "other brand" of paper towel on the commercial, but don’t expect it to last very long if you practice yoga with any regularity.

Rubber Yoga Mats

This is the best type for the environmentally-conscious money saver. They are sturdy yet inexpensive. Rubber is a replaceable resource, but be sure your mat isn’t made of synthetic rubber. This is made from an environmentally unfriendly process, and is liable to have the same health detriments, although not as bad as the phthalate mats. Natural rubber mats could be a problem for you if you’re allergic to latex, but they do make phthalate-free and latex-free mats for a bit more in cost. They are well-worth it rather than exercise on harmful chemicals or the rubber/latex that causes your allergies to flare up.

Pilates Mats?

Can you use Pilates mats for yoga? Sure, but watch for a few things: First of all, a Pilates mat is much thicker than a typical yoga mats because you spend more time on the floor doing Pilates than doing yoga. It’s beneficial in saving knees, hips, elbows, shoulders, and spine from contact injuries. You may want to consider it to cushion an old injury to prevent further damage. Second, Pilates mats aren’t necessarily made with non-slip surfaces. You need this for yoga, so be sure it has this feature. If you do both yoga and Pilates and want to use just one mat for both, definitely use a Pilates mat. Using a mat meant for yoga when doing Pilates could cause injuries.
